The Black History Month Multicultural Heroes Hall of Fame Case Competition Inducts Civil Rights Icon Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth

The Black History Month Multicultural Heroes Hall of Fame inducted Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, the civil rights icon, last night. A team of Eli Broad College of Business students delivered a powerful presentation detailing how Rev. Shuttlesworth worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to end segregation in Alabama despite death threats.  Jalen Burks, business preference freshman; Imani Cole, business preference freshman; and Malik Mix, business admitted sophomore created a powerful presentation demonstrating how both Dr. King and Rev. Shuttlesworth did not fear death and used nonviolent protest to achieve their goals. The team representing the National Association of Black Accountants received a $2000 cash grand prize.

Jalen Burks of Eastpointe, MI son of Tamica and Alfonia Roberts is a 2016 graduate of Cass Technical High School, Detroit, MI. He is a Business Preference freshman in The Eli Broad College of Business.

Imani Cole of West Bloomfield, MI daughter of Rodney Cole and Katrina Cole is a 2016 graduate of West Bloomfield High School, West Bloomfield, MI. She is a Business Preference freshman in The Eli Broad College of Business.

Malik Mix of Detroit, MI son of Clarence and Tamika Mix is a 2015 graduate of University Preparatory Academy High School in Detroit, MI. He is a Business Admitted freshman in The Eli Broad College of Business.

The members of the Second Place Team, Leaders of Tomorrow, presented Nelson Mandela, the first black President of South Africa are:

Raven Jefferson Brinkley of Southfield, MI daughter of Heidi and Curtis Cannon is a 2015 graduate of Ferndale High School in Ferndale, MI. She is a Packaging sophomore in College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Jared Davis of Plymouth, MI son of Wade and Adrienne Davis is a 2013 graduate of Plymouth High School in Canton, MI. He is a Integrative Studies in Social Science junior in the College of Social Science.

Keith K. Frierson of Grand Blanc, MI son of Kenneth and Alicia Frierson is a 2015 graduate of Grand Blanc High School in Grand Blanc, MI. He is a Business Preference sophomore in The Eli Broad College of Business.

Members of third place team, Black Girl Magic, presented Sojourner Truth, American abolitionist and Women’s Rights Activist are:

Emettra Nelson of Southfield, MI daughter of Traci and Emmett Nelson is a 2011 graduate of Southfield Lathrup High School. She is an Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Education senior in the College of Agricultural and Natural Resources.

Camri Nelson of Southfield, MI daughter of Traci and Emmett Nelson is a 2014 graduate of Southfield Lathrup High School. She is an Arts and Humanities junior in the Residential College of Arts and Humanities.

Ja’Del Hughes Davis of Detroit, MI daughter of Jacqueline Battles and Dell Davis is a 2012 graduate of North Allegheny Senior High School. She is a Chemical Engineering senior in the College of Engineering.

The student teams represented a diverse cross-section of MSU students from College of Communication Arts and Sciences, Lyman Briggs, College of Natural Science, College of Social Science, Eli Broad College of Business, College of Arts and Letters, College of Education, Charles Drew Science Scholars, and the Honors College.

The MSU Faculty Panel judging the competition included Dr. Lee June, Honors College professor and former Vice President for Student Affairs and Services and Associate Provost for Academic Student Services and Multicultural Issues; Paulette Granberry Russell, Advisor to the MSU President for Diversity and Director MSU’s Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives; and Dr. Kathy Petroni, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and the Deloitte/Michael Licata Professor of Accounting in The Eli Broad College of Business.
